Given the war ended in September, I'd say they came here for R&R prior to demob....
Can't find any info on Collingsworth visiting NZ though, Possible he came here to visit friends made during the war?

Trev, my detector batteries are charging... So what else was there to do :)

Hi Hatter

I see you are on the Detector Prospector Forum. Steves one. I am sure if you post the data as supplied by Mudwiggle, one of the forum members in that State will contact the Funeral Home or the Next of Kin and get you an address or contact details. I see this find having a very happy ending.

HI Hatter

I rang his son Warren Zuder Jr. Got his answerphone. So left a message with all the details, and my email address. So hopefully he will get back to me via email, then I can send you his email etc. Will keep you informed.

You guys are great!! Have saved me all the leg work! I suppose I did have to work ever so hard detecting at a nice sandy beach with clear water in the sunshine, what a chore. I recon it would be great to reunite the Zuder family and this relic. I know I would be appreciative it was my fathers/grandfathers tag. Cheers guys, look forward to hearing from you Trev.

Hi All

Just got of the phone after speaking to Warren Zuder Jr, yep Warren Serge Zuder is his Dad. He is over the moon with the find. And thanks all concerned. He has cousins in Auckland, but he is an American. He will email me, and then I will send you a PM 1864 Hatter with his email address so you can contact him direct.

What a great ending to this remarkable find.

Hi All

I told Warren to google the Paydirt Forum, so he can read the whole thread. Hopefully he will join and make a post.

Hi All

1864Hatter you have a PM. The Late Warren Serge Zuders daughter emailed me after Warren Junior rang her to tell her the exciting news.
So 1864Hatter now has that, so he can contact her. What a great ending eh lads. Credit to the one and only 1864Hatter for finding it, and Mudwiggle for his brilliant sleuthing skills.

Cheers Trev aka " The Hatter" bloody Hatters everywhere these days lol.

Firstly, a great big thank you to Mudwiggle and The Hatter!!! I doubt I would have had the drive to see this thing through like you two have. I'm glad you guys did it though because personally if it was my dads/granddads tags I would be rather delighted to be delivered surch a cool relic from the past in such an unconventional and unlikely a circumstance!!
So cheers for your help.

Secondly, I have sent the following email to Warrens Daughter.

Gidday,

My name is Mathias Brandl, a metal detectorist from New Zealand.

I believe you have been contacted by a Trev (perhaps Trevor) from New Zealand. If so he probably spoke to you about the recent finding of a Us Navy sailors dog tag. It so happens that I was the finder of said tag and posted about the finding of it on a local metal detecting forum. Following my post two members of the forum did an exemplary job of tracking down the family and finally you of the sailor, namely Warren Serge Zuder.

If you would like I can send you the tag. All I would need is a postal address. I hope it brings you some joy to have this relic from the past back in your family. It has been a short but exciting journey through history for me learning about this metal detecting find.

P.S I have attached a photo of both sides of the tag.

Regards,

Mathias

Hi All

Mathias you just about bought me to tears after reading your post. To me this has been an epic journey of discovery. And all done in less than 24 hours. I shall call you Sir Mathias, after this, or Sir 1864Hatter, and as to "Mudwiggle" well arise Sir Mudwiggle. As to me I will just be a Trev aka "The Hatter". Well done young fella, I always knew you would do well on those Auckland Beaches. A true Gold Detectorer always looks for bottom/basement. And your time in your homeland on the gold served you well. Full pans to you always.

Cheers Trev

Thanks for the kind words Trev. Best of luck to you in your ventures, wherever / whatever they may be. I really did very little other than finding the tag while looking for gold ring. You and Mudwiggle did the hard work! The Zuder Family should be thanking you! I'm glad my finds can do something more useful than keep the lawnmower in the shed company.

Morning, we have a reply!

Dear Mathias,
I'm sorry I didn't acknowledge you from the get go but I'm not very good on the computer. The paydirt forum was difficult for me to follow.
Just an FYI, my father came back to New Zealand after the war and met my Mother. They married, had my sister, and came back to the States.
So I have family there in New Zealand. I personally have been there 4-5 times and still plan on returning within the next couple of years with my Mother.

I'm so thankful to you and your fellow members for their curiosity and perseverance in finding the owner. As you probably know, my Father past August 2011.

Then there was her address, I have sent a reply and will get the tag in the mail asap. Job done!!

And now....On sandy beaches and muddy soil, rings and coins await my coil!

So just to keep all my finds in this thread I will just post my half sovereign here again. I HAVE NOT FOUND ANOTHER ONE. yet.

Today low tide was at 11.20am so I hit the beach at 9.30, ended up being there until almost one. A long time in the water with a short sleeve wetsuit and the cold souwesterly we had going. Was a fairly low tide so made a few spots a bit more accessible, still was a bit tricky getting onto any really good concentrations of finds. Ended up covering a lot of ground and found a few bits and pieces. Notably I found six silver threepences from 1933 to 1942 which was a good score for the beach. Often have hunts without any silver coins at all, so six was good. Also five good conditioned pennys.
The mrs had dropped me off in the morning so when I was cold enough I gave her a bell to come get me. She was out shopping and would be another half an hour or so. Oh well, back into the water, minutes later out pops a 4.5g 9ct ring and threepence number six. For once it was lucky that she was off spending money!

Well done. Lucky you had the extra time. Tell me do you think the pennies etc are cleaner out of the sea water, than under the soil? Just a thought.thanks. Snowdrop
