Snowdrop, some of the pennies I find in the sea are clean as and look like they were lost yesterday. Others are very corroded and may not even be round anymore. Invariably the good condition pennies come out of the black smelly (anoxic) sand. The pennies come out clean and right when I find them in this sand, and often by a couple of hours later when I get home they can be dull and starting to tarnish. Due to being exposed to oxygen. Well I'm not sure if I should admit to the next bit. To get the same brightness back that they have when fresh out of the sea I give them a quick bath in hydrochloric acid (bricklayers acid). Then I rub them with some cooking oil and put them In a zip lock bag. Of the hundreds and hundreds of pennys that I found in parks etc. while in Dunedin none got close to as good a condition as the ones in the sea.
And now....On sandy beaches and muddy soil, rings and coins await my coil!

I expect you'll find you get the dreaded disease on those acid-washed pennies - the residual chlorides won't take much to start the evil cycle unless they're extensively neutralised and rinsed well in distilled water.
Dilute sulphuric would probably be better if you're going that way.

Gotta love that glossy green you only get on the dirt pennies though.

Mudwiggle, I missed a step in my description, the liberal rubbing with baking soda!

So I had a hunt this weekend near where I got the half sovereign recently. I arrived pretty much at low tide and headed for a part of the beach that looked promising. I got targets straight away and within 5 minutes had a 6.25g 18ct yellow and white gold ring. The ring was only under an inch or so of sand and I found it by just scraping some sand away with my gumboot. A couple of meters away I got the silver ring. That was it unfortunately, these good areas tend to be quite a lot smaller than you would like them to be.

PS. The ring is inscribed, if you can tell me what it says you can have it.

As a conclusion to the military dog tags saga, Michelle Zuder, Warren Zuder's daughter, has received the long lost piece of family history.
That was a fun little adventure of discovery! I went for a detect this morning and had to suffer through glorious sunshine on a sandy beach! What hell! Unfortunately the weather was so nice I was not blessed with fantastic finds, just a few coins and a silver ring....

Silver rings are always acceptable in my book. Much better than a mood ring. :-)

The handle thing top left is off a "Rolls Razor" or similar I think. Just opened up one of mine to check and it's almost identical.

Braved the rain this morning... Im glad I did as I found a fantastic condition penny trade token from 1864, and a first, a half penny trade token, from 1858. I am amazed at the condition of the B gittos token, here is a link for it. http://museumvictoria.co...uckland-new-zealand-1864

Unfortunately the other token has not fared as well but I was easily able to identify it. Here is al link. http://museumvictoria.co...uckland-new-zealand-1858

And pictures below, also a silver shilling.

Gidday chaps, I had another go at detecting today. Tried a funny little spot where I have in the past found some Silver coins etc.
I found what was a silver ingot pendant. It had a small metal loop at the top for attaching to a necklace but that broke off soon after finding it.
Cleaned up well and weighs in at 10.3g third of an ounce. Stoked to find an ingot of precious (although barely) metal. Fingers crossed for some gold again soon!

What can I say, it has been three weeks since my last bit of gold. I have had a couple of exploratory tips to areas where I would not really expect to find any gold, and I didn't. Actually found barely anything. Today I thought Id go to one of Auckland's major goldfields. When I got there I was greeted by up to a metre of fresh sand....bugger. I didn't even bother with the main beach and walked down the coast a bit but same story all along, a bedrock area where my mate had scored a sovereign was well and truly buried.... But sand has to come from somewhere and eventually found a good looking patch that was a little bit uncovered, what do you know....targets! I found a neat old bottle, it has air bubble inclusions, no markings and is made of thick glass, the picture shows it next to an 800ml bottle, but it only holds 350ml. Any Ideas what it might have held and or how old it might be? The area produced mostly modern decimal crap but after a bit of time the inevitable happened, I found some gold!! It was a ring with an unusual design that I didn't recognise, upon getting home Mrs hatter informed me that I have found an Irish wedding ring. Good one. Happy hunting guys and gals.

Oh yeah um the Goldfield is just over the back from the other place. Not too far along though or you get to the next place. There was also a tree and fourteen seagulls so keep an eye out for those. I hope that helps, I'm not the best with descriptions.

If any of those seagulls has one leg then I know exactly where you mean. :-)
