Good guesses, although the green is from the copper electrode :)

Turned out to be a nice chunk of 32lber cannonball shrapnel that the Brits were lobbing around in the mid 1800's !
Right chuffed, and humbled by the power these things had, especially as they were filled with oversize ball bearings!

The sheer weight of this piece brings home just how destructive these things must have been. This bit weighs in at over a kilo, and would easily remove a limb (if you were unfortunate to get in the way!)

Interesting find.
What would the diameter be of a complete one?

Actual diameter, complete is just a smidge over 6" (15.5cm)

Started working this one out until the grey matter began steaming with excess trig/chords and radii, then took the easy way:
Find bowl or saucepan that fits the curve, measure diameter of said receptacle... Simple.

Unfortunately, chances of finding the rest of it is less than remote as they're probably scattered over several acres.

Still, looks good in the display and since it wasn't on my bucket list, I have just added it in order to tick it off :)

Gold! GOLD!GOLD!

Picked my way through the flooding and slips to hit the local.
Got there to see nice angry, dirty brown 2m waves.
As I waited for the rain to ease a bit, I sat and watched the beach, noting one area where two different lines of swell came in opposed to each other. The beach looked to be all the same level with no obvious cuts, but there had to be something going on there with that much turbulence and backwash.
So, I got kitted up and headed down.

This lot all came from that one area - probably about 30 x 20m, the rest of the beach was silent and everytime I wandered off to try another spot I found myself getting drawn back. It was only lack of light that finally drove me out.

Very nice time pocket with a lot of the finds dating around 1940's-1960's, notable exception being musket ball #2 for the collection :)

.... the other notible exception being the Ford Ghia badge, although some would say that the 50's or 60's is right where it belongs!
Congrats on the other superb finds....GOLD is always a highlight.
Gotta love that big ole bottle opener too...a true classic.

Returned to the Honey Pit - And not disappointed !!

Pleased to see some rocks there that weren't visible before, so got the waterproofs on and got stuck in.
Intensively worked the edge of the water as it rose from dead low to just before High. Conscious effort to stay real slow and focus on the whispers.
At one stage, I was practically standing in one spot and just digging target after target. Incredible given how many coils must have been over this beach.

Back home, arm and back are killing me, but I got that warm glow.
$15 in goldies
About $4 in old decimals
4 shillings, 4 6d, 7 3d (Best haul of these yet)
3 pennies, 1 half, and a florin.
925's: 1 plain ring, a full set of 3 stacker rings and a Peace sign
Another 9ct heart ring (this makes about #4 for me - Any idea why so many of this design? Was it a particular fashion at some stage?)
Photo locket, with soggy remains of ancient photo
Junk Rings: YingYang, Home made Union Jack ring and old Skull ring (that looks more like Darth Vader now :)

Oddballs: Harmonica reeds, CAC cartridge and an old vaccination bottle.

Time for a beer and relax.

Back at the beach today, watching the NE surges do their thing. With the king tides at the mo' I've been driving out to have a nosey every few days and watching how things shift. Have picked up a trend in the cut and dump locations for the sand with about a 10m shift per week, and the shallow lens is slowly working its way along the beach.
Waterproofs on again and into it.

Massive day.

$18 in goldies alone, and probably half that in shrapnel but most was rotten and destined for the garden.
However finds of the day were:
My first half crown (1943)
My oldest NZ find (1872 shilling), both in excellent nick due to the freshwater that had been flowing over them from the stormwater outfall
I couldn't believe it when I saw Vickies head!
Third place went to the NSW police button - In use from 1935 to 1950, although I can't imagine why an Aussie Cop would be in uniform over here unless it was some big case. Papers Past hasn't been any help...so far.
Also dredged up 4 Silver rings - in various stages of decay, one so corroded I thought it was Ali until I cleaned it up and saw the 925.
And a nice silver bracelet.

Very few scraps of Ali, but plenty of lead. Was hoping it boded well for gold, but was not to be.

Very hard hearing the tones over the wind at times, despite having the hood up.

Really enjoyable afternoon, and shouted myself to a couple of beers on the way home.

First trip with the new Deteknix magic wand. Sycotoad has a review covered here: XPointer Review I agree with him, no falsing even when prying and digging and will still chase wisps of tinfoil happily. Well worth the money. See Guardian if you want one.

Anyway. here's a sample of some of the mojo that comes with every Xpointer :)

Virgin campsite, and whilst my intel was possibly a bit enthusiastic it turned up a couple of goodies other than a pocketful of change and millions of tear tabs.

First surprise was the amount of munitions found. Lots of it and quite varied, including 2 live .303 rounds, one of which I deftly defused with the lesche by slicing the top off. Of course, that would have to be the 1942 Canadian one wouldn't it...Nothing says "Oops!" like staring at a tube of explosive chocolate hail!
Although the bog-standard CAC round just fell apart where the bullet had swollen.

Many more rounds were dug this day - to the point where I tried to find somewhere where the damn things weren't! With little luck. They just kept coming.

In amongst all the ordnance however, there were some gems.

A Queen Scout badge - After doing a bit of research into this badge, there would have been a grumpy Scout who'd worked his @rse off to earn this, and lose it. I didn't work nearly as hard to get this one though :)

And of course, nothing makes a hunt like round shiny things.

As the honey pit is now under about a half metre, plus, of sand, I wandered off up the beach to see if the first week of the school holidays would be lucrative.

Midday, on a beach during holidays - big mistake.
Bloody kids hung around like sandflies. That irritating 8 - 10yo age too.
No matter where I went, as soon as the scoop went in, it was a battle as to who got it first! Even the old faithful tactic of marking an imaginary target in the sand with an X and saying, "whatever it is you can have it - I think it might be a gold ring..." and then putting as much distance between us as possible didn't work for long. Started carrying a dummy tear tab to show them every time I dug, but they wised up to that one.
Taught one lad a new word when he kept hovering inside the swinging arc, but suspect he already knew it as it didn't work.

Eventually gave up and moved on to less irritating sand.

After 6Hrs, gave up and headed home with 5 junks, 1944 Ha'penny, 1 teeny-tiny 925 padlock earring and $18 in gold...plus a good handful of scrap ali.
- At least I covered the cost of fuel this time.

It's a bummer when your productive bit of beach gets sanded in. Good on you for persevering
And now....On sandy beaches and muddy soil, rings and coins await my coil!

Big tides.

Hit first beach at a bitterly cold, windy and rainy 3am for a couple of hours.
Here's a pic of the total haul:

[Insert picture of nothing here]

Yep, My first skunking. Nothing but 6 tear tabs.
I also screamed like a girl when I stepped on a large flounder in the shallows. It must've scooted in behind the coil, nearly shat meself!

Went home to thaw out, lick my wounds and sort out somewhere else for the afternoon tide when it was a bit warmer.

Somewhere else was a lot more productive. Plenty of lead, ended up with just under 600g of sinkers.
But tucked in amongst them I unearthed $7 spendies, a nice 925 and amethyst ring, a 9ct ring, and a 925 jade earring.

Also a genuine Disneyland keyfob, ancient .303 cartridge, home made brass hei matau, A lucky charm (cos it says so) and my first cellphone.
And a bit of local history, an otherwise normal keytab from George Berry Engineering. Catch is, the phone number is Kaikohe 17 which puts it back in the days of the manual phone exchanges (A bit of Far North nostalgia for me as we were on the second to last manual exchange (Gt Barrier was the last) when we moved up here - the days when the operator knew all the gossip, and knew where everyone was. Waking up in the middle of the night to the last of the rings fading away wondering if that was your call.... Simpler days.)

Still a couple of tides left - Get into it.

Hmmph. Sand everywhere... Still, dragged myself out of the car to try and justify the drive.
Focussed on the dry sand this time as the wet sand was deep and soft with lots of aerated sand.

Worth the effort, with $14 in gold spendies, my second (dead) cellphone in as many hunts(!) and the usual assortment of 1's and 2's, junk jewellery and blobs of molten ali etc.

Couple of pennies, a 1960 and battered 1916 sixpence.

Sun's starting to get fierce already. Regretted leaving the hat behind (it was solid cloud and persisting down when I left).
