Parts of a snippet from our local paper.

Last year without any landowner concent, neally every square metre north of the brynderwyns to cape reinga was scanned for minerals and metals by arial surveying. The public payed for this..again without consent.. and now our mayor is heading to canada, on ratepayer funds to lure international mining companies to the region.
Seven years ago a mining company was turned away from whangaroa where they were keen on GOLD exploration. To access the GOLD, enormous volumes of rock would need to be removed, puncturing one of the largest mercury beds in the country. It would of polluted kaeo river, whangaroa harbour and waterways which feed in around and into matauri bay.
This is before huge toxic tailings dams were factored into the equation.
...barking up the wrong tree using our money to bring global mining giants here.

Bits from last weeks paper too.

Our mayor will encourage the purchase of prospecting permits by the mining industry and has the support of the FNDC, NRC, EDM and NZPM.
...says mining is already big buisseness in the north.
"mining holds great promise and its an industry with a very low footprint", he says.

A very low footprint, youve got to be pulling our legs...

This VB in the North - is it a new phenomenon?
In my youth it was all Lion Red or Brown
except during the beer strike when all sorts of
crap brands were dug out to keep the pubs going.
When that ran out it was the local red wine - a real killer.

GOLD soveriegn or a pre 1800 coin, whats harder to find. Im hot on the trail for both. I have the spots in mind its just the time to get there and do it. Bit of a high target to set but i think of what finds i may make along the way.
Any coin from King George iii (1760-1820 ) would be a serious find.

lool...i think that is a goal for all of us with a detector shane...hahaha and i coin as old as that would be a fantastic find no matter the shape it is in as far as i am concerned.

It's all good man, good to have a space that pretty much anything goes and still loosely touches on our hobby. I know I've been drifting off topics pretty easy lately so at least I can't get into too much trouble here!

I try my best to stick to GOLD related topics. I post what i observe hear see around me. Plus i prefer to keep my finds page clean of aliens and victoria bitter...GOLDEN.

Speaking of old coins. Ive been trying to clean up that florin i found and now i feel ive ruined it visually. Should have left it alone. And i bashed this other coin i found with a rock a few times to clean of this thick crust on it and it turned out to be a mint as, bairly circulated 1933 shilling... Bad idea, have wrecked it. All bent and scratched. It cleaned up all shiny too in the end..

I think if you're going to clean silver coins, use cloudy ammonia, purchased in 1 litre bottles from countdown's cleaning isle. Put the coin in for a few minutes, then take it out and clean gently with a soft cloth. Repeat as necessary until clean.

Please don't do the rock thing with anything that could turn out to be a 1935 thruppence!

Yes the rock bashing idea is not a good one. Its the anxiety of wanting to know on the spot what one has found. Too impatient to wait till i get home. Might try the ammonia as the CLR is quite grunty. It was when i tried the alluminium foil, baking soda and boiling water trick that peeled the surface back on my florin.

ya the amonia works great...i use it now to...lets face it some coins just wont clean up due to age and where it was found.

Especially those pre 1900 silvers. I have five of them and there all blackened by time. They look cool even in this state. The sooner i learn to leave them alone the better i guess.
Havent been out this last week. Had to put my trip out with Chrisyboy on hold as im too busy this week. Hope to get out the sarvo if its not rainin.

To those who wish to seek what I would consider is most likely New Zealands largest fortune I shall relate the following - My great great grandfather was described in a history book as 'Cute, sharp and sly in his dealings' - when he died his records showed he had £10,000 (Ten thousands pounds) and it was all in gold coin - If these were sovereigns then there are TEN THOUSAND of them but I daresay some will be half sovereigns, Guineas and other and all predate 1862...Yes indeed there ARE gold coins out there to find - also I know that there is possible a hundred pound in gold coin at Grays Corner near Waimate, One hundred pound in gold coins near Kurow and one hundred pound in gold coins at Tabletop Station in the Hakataramea I understand - these stories were told to me by elderly people, all long gone back when I was a lot younger than I am now.
